Bangladesh's busy capital, with Mughal forts, river life on the Buriganga and its famous biryani.
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and the arrival point for most visits home. Old Dhaka, along the Buriganga river, is a maze of lanes, bazaars and historic buildings, while the newer north of the city has the shopping centres, hotels and restaurants of Gulshan, Banani and Dhanmondi.
Start with Ahsan Manzil, the pink palace of the Nawabs of Dhaka, then Lalbagh Fort and the Star Mosque. Take a boat from Sadarghat to see the river traffic up close, and leave room for kacchi biryani and street snacks such as fuchka.
Entry rules for Bangladesh depend on the passport you hold and why you are travelling, and they can change. Check the official entry requirements below when you book and again shortly before you go.
Read TravelHealthPro's Bangladesh page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip. Dhaka is hot for much of the year, so drink plenty of bottled or treated water and take care in the sun. Mosquitoes are common, so cover up and use insect repellent. If you have a heart or lung condition, check local air quality during your stay.
The currency is the Bangladeshi taka (BDT). Carry some cash for rickshaws, markets and small shops, let your bank know you are travelling and check what your card charges for use abroad.

Dress modestly, with shoulders and legs covered, as Bangladesh is a mainly Muslim country. Local dress codes matter even more during Ramadan, when opening hours of shops and restaurants can also change.
Cycle rickshaws carry a large share of journeys, alongside auto rickshaws known locally as CNGs, buses and taxis. The city's first metro line, MRT Line 6, opened in December 2022. Agree a rickshaw or CNG fare before you set off.
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) serves Dhaka. It lies about 15 km north of the city centre, so allow extra time for the road journey into town.
Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, falls on 14 April each year in Bangladesh and is a public holiday. In Dhaka it begins at dawn with a gathering under the banyan tree at Ramna, and a colourful procession organised by fine arts students follows.
